How to get the best price for a new car - 5 Techniques

How to get the best price for a new car - 5 Techniques

At the Dealer

In an ideal situation the dealership should be on your side at finding the right vehicle at the right price. However, some car dealers place more emphasis on profits rather than customer service or satisfaction. When you are buying a new car, keep your interests in front at all times. By avoiding common traps that can cost you extra money you will get the best bang for you buck. Here are five tips to get you on your way to owning the best car for your budget.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

1. Step 1

Do your Homework: Most dealerships will prey on the unprepared. Going into the showroom "green" – without the requisite facts and pricing data – will give the salesperson much more control over the purchasing process.

You need to thoroughly research your choices. Gather a wide variety of reviews from web sites such as Yahoo Autos!, www.edmonds.com or MSN Auto are great places to start. You want to check the reliability, safety, fuel economy and pricing of any models you are thinking about. Do not put this off until the day you plan to go to the dealer for a test drive.

Research and determine what the trade-in value of your current vehicle is to determine its approximate worth. This will depend on the vehicle's age, condition, mileage, options and other equipment along with where you trade it in.

2. Step 2

Do not assume that the sticker price is the asking or purchase price. To get the lowest price, start with the cost of the car for the dealer, which can be found on the internet. What you are looking for is referred to as the dealer invoice price. However, this is not necessarily the price that the dealer paid for the vehicle. In most cases there are often behind-the-scenes bonuses, such as dealer incentives and kickbacks, which give dealers a higher profit margin.
You can check the price-quotes on the websites listed below in the resources section for web links. A reasonable price to start negotiations is between 3 to 6 percent over the dealer invoice price or Wholesale Price. If the model is in high demand you may have to start with 8 percent and go from there. Keep in mind you can get a lower price through effective negotiation at the dealership.

3. Step 3

Negotiate one item at one time. Salespeople often will mix in financing, leasing, and trade-in negotiations together, often asking you to negotiate around a monthly payment figure. This approach will put the power of negotiation into the hands of the dealer. This type of approach will give the dealer more latitude to offer you a favorable number in one area while inflating terms in another.
Make it clear from the get go: You want the best possible markup over your starting price. Mention that you intend to visit other dealerships selling the same vehicle and you intend to buy from the dealer that gives you the best price.
After you have determined and agreed to a price, now is the time to talk about financing, trade-ins or leasing. If you are met with interference you can leave at any time. Sometimes heading for the door is a sure way to jump-start a slow-moving negotiation or bring a lower offer.

4. Step 4

Have your financing pre-approved in advance. This can be done through banks, credit unions and loan organizations – then compare what the dealer has to offer. We are starting to see more Zero Percent financing on vehicles from the different manufactures. If you do not qualify for the high terms the salesperson may not try to sign you up for a higher interest rate loan. More than likely, even with not-so good credit, you may get better deals elsewhere.

5. Step 5

Do not pay for extra accoutrements that you may not need. Dealers will often try to lure you into to extra services such as rust-proofing, fabric-protection and paint protection. They may also try to push VIN etching on your windows to deter thieves, it doesn't work. Most of these things to not work anyway – do not get them.
These services and fees are unnecessary. If the items are listed on the bill of sale, cross them off. Most new, modern cars do not have rust problems. You can treat upholstery yourself or get your own paint protection for much less than what the dealer charges. You can also get your own VIN etching kit for anywhere from $25 to $100 and do it yourself.

How to Sell Your Vehicle For Sale By Owner with a Sure-Fire Attention Getter

How to Sell Your Vehicle For Sale By Owner with a Sure-Fire Attention Getter

Lots of people sell vehicles of all shapes, sizes and specs. To move your sales ad to the top of the interest list, you need an attention getter…something that sets your ad apart from the rest. The overpriced “typo” gets attention even when potential buyers KNOW that price can’t be real. Curiosity just adds another motivation to call about a vehicle of interest anyway. Using this method, at best, you get a lot of attention and inquiry about your ad and sell your vehicle. At worst, you get to answer a burning question for your callers and make them feel good for knowing the answer.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Instructions

1. Step 1

Post an ad for your vehicle and pitch your attention getter. In this ad, add three zeros to your selling price. For example, if you plan to sell the vehicle for $6,000, list the price at $6,000,000.

2. Step 2

Gauge your potential buyer. When the phone rings or you get an email inquiry, it will either be from someone genuinely interested in the vehicle or someone simply curious about the price. Gauge which caller this is by initial questions and by reactions as you pitch your vehicle.

3. Step 3

Answer and sales pitch. Address the attention getter by providing an answer to the outrageous price, and use the initial interest to offer your sales pitch on the vehicle.

Answer the phone or email and explain that the price was a typo and explain the true price. (This addresses the attention getter and curiosity.)

Then immediately move on to explain just why this vehicle is so special. Sing the vehicle’s praises (truthfully). The buyer will check your statements when he sees the vehicle/tests it.

4. Step 4

Follow up with an offer of action. After your pitch, offer to meet the potential buyer, and let him see the vehicle.

(The buyer could come to your home, but that could be an issue. Too, agreeing to meet elsewhere socially pressures the potential buyer to show up and show up on time.)

Good meeting spots may include a WalMart parking lot or other store with a large parking lot and security
cameras, your mechanic’s shop, or a mall. Being in an area where faces will be seen, noted and possibly caught on camera prevents a lot of shady situations.

5. Step 5

    Complete the sale.

How to Purchase Auto Parts for Your Vehicle

How to Purchase Auto Parts for Your Vehicle

Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Car

Many people go into an auto part store to purchase automotive parts for their vehicle and don't have the correct information pertaining to their vehicle. First you need to know the name of the part you want to purchase. Now you need to know the year, make and model of your vehicle. This is very important; you need to know exactly what size engine you have. Many people will say it's a six cylinder. This doesn't work any more; because today they make several six cylinders. So you will need to know exactly which motor you have in your vehicle. Possibly you will need to have the Vin. number from your vehicle. For example if you have a Nissan almost always you will be asked for a Vin. #. Sometimes you will need to know the wheel base and possibly the size tire. My business has experienced this. I will tell you where to find this information.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

·       Year

·       Make

·       Model

·       Engine Size

·       Vin. #

·       Wheel Base

·       Tire size

1.      Step 1

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

    Driver's Door Open

First for the year, make and model of your vehicle. You can look on your insurance card for this information. Also open your driver's door and you will find the exact production date on the sticker. On the body of your vehicle you will find make and model. Your Vin # is also on your insurance card. If your insurance card is not available to you at the present time; than look at the windshield. You will find the Vin # in the lower corner on the driver's side of the windshield.

2.      Step 2

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Look Under Car Hood For Engine Size

Now you want the exact engine size of your vehicle. For this you will need to open the hood of the automobile. In most cars today you will find a lever inside the car; on the driver's side. Possibly will say hood release. Pull the lever. Than go to the front of the vehicle and reach under the hood to find a lever and will require you to pull to the right or pull lever upward to release the hood all the way and lift up. Now you are looking for a sticker that is going to tell you the engine size of the vehicle.

3.      Step 3

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Start At Front Tire To Measure Wheel Base

Now if you need to know the wheel base of your vehicle; this information can be found on the inside of the driver's door. If not there than you will need a measuring tape and possibly another person to help hold the measuring tape at one end. You want to measure from front wheel to the rear wheel of the vehicle. From center of hub cap (front wheel) to the center of the hub cap (rear wheel).

4.      Step 4

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

    Tire Information

To find your tire size; you need to look at the tire. The size will be on the tire and will look something like this. (example only P185 65R 14)Also if you look on the inside of driver's door you will find this information also.

How to Detail Your Car On A Budget

How to Detail Your Car On A Budget

Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Detail Your Car On A Budget

How many times do we get into our car and think "this is disgusting, I really need to go have this cleaned". But just don't want to shell out the $125+ dollars it costs now to have it done for you. Well here's a simple and economical way to detail your vehicle yourself for only a couple dollars.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

·       bucket

·       dish soap

·       2 cans foaming carpet cleaner from Dollar Store or the Walmart brand

·       hose

·       rags/towels

·       scrub brush

·       vinegar

·       armor all

·       shop vac or other cleaner that is able to suck water

·       car wax

1.      Step 1

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

The very first thing you'll need to do is make sure you have all the supplies you need to clean the vehicle. My husband likes to use the foaming carpet cleaner from the dollar store, but if you're like me you can use a more natural cleaner as well. You can mix a cup of vinegar in with your water and add 1/2 cup of borax with it and that cleans really well too. Or melt down in 1 gallon of boiling water 1/3 cup of Fels Naptha soap and add that to another gallon of water to get the carpets really clean too. Another great cleaner for vehicles to get it shiny inside is Armor All which is optional but gives it the extra nice look.

2.      Step 2

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Next you will need to take your bucket and fill it up with lukewarm water and add a splash of dish soap to it. Then take a rag and wash the whole car thoroughly opening the door jams to clean those out as well. Rinse off with hose, and wipe down with a clean towel.

3.      Step 3

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Now you are ready to tackle the inside. Right now is the time you need to sort through any garbage that is left in the vehicle that needs to be discarded or put aside. Toss out any wrappers, coffee cups, old papers, any food laying around from going through the drive-through, clothes that don't belong in there, etc.
    You have the idea!

4.      Step 4

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

The fourth thing you want to do is vacuum thoroughly using either a Shop Vac or if you don't own a Shop Vac, your household vacuum should do fine as long as it has a strong suction. Making sure to get into all the crevices as well as under all the seats.

5.      Step 5

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Now it's time to wash the carpets. If you are using the foaming carpet cleaner spray down generously over carpets and seats. For the really bad stains spray another coat. If you are using the borax blend or Fels Naptha now is the time to scrub that in too. Let it set for 20 minutes. Get a lukewarm bucket of water and scrub carpet with damp towel. Repeat step on hard stains.

6.      Step 6

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Now take a dry towel and rub into carpet to dry. Then take Shop Vac and suck any excess water or lint that is left over. If you don't own a Shop Vac you may need to either borrow one, or worst case scenario you may need to rent one. Either way we are still coming out ahead. Repeat steps with clean towels to ensure you have gotten all the dirt out.

7.      Step 7

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Next you will take a wet towel and wipe all vinyl surfaces, dashboard, door panels, back of seats, center console(if you have one),etc. Using a cleaner of your choice to lift soiled areas. Dry with towel.

8.      Step 8

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

The next step would be to wipe all vinyl surface with the Armor All. Spray on towel and wipe down really well. Again this is optional but it really does leave it looking awesome!

9.      Step 9

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Now that your all done cleaning the inside it's time to clean the windows inside and out. My cleaner of choice for the windows is part vinegar and water, wiping really good with just an old rag. Don't use paper towels it tends to leave a lot of lint.

10.     Step 10

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

The last step to detailing your vehicle is to wax the outside of the car. Follow the directions on your choice of wax, using 1 coat should do.

11.     Step 11

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Now go take your family out to dinner with the money you just saved! Whoo hoo! You'll be a big hero!
